Dead, missing after explosion hits asylum boat
The Prime Minister's office has confirmed there is a "serious unfolding incident" on board a boat carrying around 49 asylum seekers to Christmas Island.
A Royal Darwin Hospital spokeswoman says the hospital has been told three people are dead, two are missing, and there are 46 "casualties" after an explosion.
She was unsure if the explosion had happened on the asylum-seekers' boat or on the Royal Australian Navy vessel which was escorting it to Christmas Island.
The Royal Darwin Hospital's National Critical Care and Trauma Unit is on high alert for the expected arrival of casualties.
The boat was intercepted near Ashmore Island off the north-west coast of Western Australia yesterday and is believed to be carrying 49 people from Afghanistan .
It is the sixth boat to arrive in Australian waters this year.
